SERVICES SPINE SURGERY

Spinal Reconstruction and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)

Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints afflicting people today. At Memorial Neuroscience Center, patients with back pain are evaluated to determine any underlying neurological or structural causes, and if such causes are found, a personalized treatment plan is created.

In most cases, chronic and acute back problems and spinal injury can be treated nonsurgically, but in some situations, one of many spinal surgery procedures can be of benefit. Memorial Neuroscience Center offers a wide range of open spinal reconstruction techniques, as well as minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS).

Minimally invasive spine surgery is an advanced, highly effective alternative to traditional surgical techniques, and it is available on an outpatient basis at Memorial Neuroscience Center. MISS uses a microsurgical technique and a one-inch incision to focus on the source of back pain and correct the problem. The results of MISS are the same as traditional open surgical procedures, with these additional benefits:

  • Ability to go home the day of surgery
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Faster healing time
  • Less damage to supportive tissues

Less potential for future problems since the spine is not weakened

MISS cannot cure all spine injuries, but it may be appropriate for:

  • Common spine conditions, such as herniated discs, lumbar stenosis, age-related disc degeneration and misaligned vertebrae
  • Patients eager to return to their normal lives
  • Patients whose age or physical condition may prevent them from undergoing traditional spinal surgery with optimal results
